REPAIRS AND RESTORATION

I enjoy carrying out repair and restoration work alongside my building of new instruments. Smaller repairs and set ups can normally be carried out within a couple of weeks, more major repairs and restoration jobs have to be programmed into my longer term work schedule.

Having a guitar set up properly is as important for the beginner as it is for the accomplished player. Someone just starting to learn to play will find the guitar a lot easier with a low action and perhaps lighter strings. Experienced players have the action and string gauges adjusted according to their technique and style of playing to give maximum ease of playing without buzzes.

Setting up an acoustic guitar properly may involve one or more of the following:

Changing strings
Adjusting the height of strings at the nut and saddle
Adjusting the truss rod
Leveling and re-profiling the frets
Fixing loose frets

Common more extensive guitar repairs and upgrades

Refrets
Making and fitting new bone nuts and saddles
Replacement fingerboards and bridges
Crack repairs and splinting
Neck resets
Re-finishing
Fitting pick up systems
Making and fitting new bone nuts and saddles

Restoration

Over the past twenty years I have been fortunate to work on some very fine instruments in need of extensive restoration and have included some pictures in my gallery.
