This was made for local musician Vince Jerrison, who also plays one of my steel string guitars. The mandolin is based on a Stefan Sobell instrument. You might have guessed I think Stefan’s instruments are superb and, although I don’t try to copy them I do like to follow his style of instrument. I like carving the tops as opposed to the flat soundboards of the guitars. It also gives me the opportunity to use some of the skills in carving I learned at West Dean making viols. This mandolin is fairly large bodied with a carved spruce top, Brazilian rosewood body and a scale of 340 . It has a very well balanced and sweet tone.
